Halloween Story!

We wrote a Halloween story as a class!
We had choices for the characters, setting and problem.

We chose:
Character: A ghost who is scared of everything
Setting: A spooky haunted house
Problem: A witch's broom broke down

We wrote as a team, putting all our ideas together. We talked about creating a beginning that would hook our readers. We tried to use lots of interesting language and made sure our story was organized by reading it over often.

Don't forget to check out our epilogue and our SURPRISE ending!

The Story of Friendship in Halloween Town

I am going to tell you a story about a ghost who was lonely and scared of everything.

It all began when this ghost decided to go to a spooky haunted house. He really wanted to make some

new friends, so he decided to knock on the door. And then the door simply opened by itself!

Well, the ghost was TERRIFIED! He was about to float away but a monster poked his head out the

door and said "I am HUNGRY..."

The ghost screamed "AUGGGGGGHHHHHH!"

"For a milkshake!" finished the monster!

"Well, said the ghost, "I know where to buy a great chocolate milkshake!"

"But I like swampberry milkshakes!" cried the monster.

"Oh, I know a place for those too!" whispered the ghost. "Would you like to go?"

"YEAH!" cried the monster while he jumped up and down and danced.

They walked down the street to the Spooky Shop to get their milkshakes. Just outside the door

they saw a witch, crying on a chair. She was holding a broken broom.

"What's wrong?" asked the ghost and monster.

"I was flying and a mean space alien snapped my broom. Now I won't make it to the haunted house

party at my friend Dracula's house!" sobbed the witch.

"Don't worry!" shouted the monster "I've known Dracula for years! He's just one haunted house

away from me!"

"We will take you there!" said the ghost.

So, they all bought extra, extra large swamp berry milkshakes and walked together to Dracula's

house.

They all became friends and partied the night away at Dracula's house. The ghost was not afraid

anymore, because now he had friends.

The End

Epilogue:

In case you are wondering, the witch was able to get her broom fixed at the Broom Store.

And even the mean space alien decided to become their friend. I know, because I am him!

Different Kinds of Smart!

We have been learning about how there are many different kinds of smart. We know that everyone has areas of "smart" and areas of "challenge". To help describe the different kinds of smart, the students created photos and wrote descriptions to tell you about one of their kinds of smart!
We also talked about how we can use different kinds of smart to show what we know. For example, one person might write about their science knowledge, another could show their thinking by drawing a diagram and talking about it!

"Building smart is about how you could be a kid who builds with lego and jenga. It means you like building."
       By Madison and Graham

"Word smart is when you can read really well and like books and writing."
       By Brynn and a Josh

"Math smart means you know a lot about math. You like numbers."
         By Logan and Cohen

"Music smart is about singing and dancing!"
         By Vlada and Seth

"People smart is when you like to help people."

"Self smart is when you know about yourself and what you need."

"Art smart is when you colour in the lines and really love art."

Outdoor Learning

Over the course of the year we will be visiting a special outdoor spot with our Kindergarten buddies. Our "spot" will be Truro Park.
We will visit the park to observe the changing seasons, document our findings and also tie in other curricular areas, such as community and changes in matter. (We will be keeping a close eye on what happens to the creek over the winter!)
We began our outdoor learning by listening to two nature stories on the hill in the Linwood School playground. We then created a web of all the things we see in our playground environment. On our first trip to the park, we will begin to compare what is the same, and what is different.
